SUMMARY:

Lead the design and development of plastic components and systems, utilizing a wide range of polymer materials and manufacturing processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and development of various plastic components and systems for various vehicle platforms, that include, but are not limited to; exterior body components, trim, seating, bumpers, flooring, etc.

  • Development and Release of engineering component and assembly drawings.

  • Functional & cost based selection of material and manufacturing methods for plastic parts.

  • Create, utilize or maintain plastic product functional specifications, material specifications and design standards.

  • Create and maintain DFMEAs and create test and analysis plans for product validation.

  • Read and understand part and assembly drawings and create part and assembly drawings.

  • Interpret Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on components and assemblies for stress and provide design solutions to high stress areas.

  • Understand and apply GD&T for tolerance analysis and drawing creation.

  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve test issues and document solutions.

  • Perform cross functional design reviews and Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) Assessments on components & assemblies.

  • Follow Textron Specialized Vehicles product development process and methods for tracking project status and open issues.

  • Leads project elements and maintains frequent contact with other functional areas, contract engineering services and suppliers.

  • Support elements of quality assurance and PPAP process requirements.

Qualifications

CAPABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of plastic design principles for various types of materials and manufacturing processes.

  • An understanding of various manufacturing methods that include, but are not limited to; Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Thermo-Forming, Roto-Molding, Extrusion & compression molding. Knowledge of tool design for the same processes is desired.

  • Knowledge of the characteristics of materials and ability to choose the most appropriate Thermoplastic, Thermoset, or rubber material for an application and process, including additives and modifiers.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficiency in usage of CAD, experience in Unigraphics is preferred.

  • Possesses and demonstrates skills to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.

  • Possesses and demonstrates a frequent use and application of engineering principles theories, concepts and techniques.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering from accredited 4 year program, or equivalent with significant plastics experience and/or plastics education orBachelor of Science Plastics Engineering from ABET accredited 4-year program, or equivalent.

OTHER DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Knowledge in prototyping processes that include, but are not limited to; additive manufacturing, cast urethanes, CNC machining & general fabrication.

  • MRP or ERP experience preferred.

  • Teamcenter or other PLM tools.

  • Experience with engineering analysis software.

  • Microsoft office products.
