The Senior Labor Relations Specialist, under the direction of the Director of Labor Relations provides Labor Relations support to all levels of the organization, and works toward the development of positive employee relations.
Provide day to day direction and leadership on all Labor and Employee related issues.
Interprets and provides direction to HR Business Partners and management on collective bargaining agreements, past practice, cases appealed to arbitration, as well as policies and procedures.
Conduct pre-negotiation review meetings with leadership, identify “must haves” and execute contract negotiation strategy.
Negotiate collective bargaining agreements, effects bargaining agreements and/or settlement agreements.
Assist with and oversee any strike preparedness activities.
Work closely with union leadership and union business agents to understand disputes and work to resolve issues and grievances when appropriate.
Evaluate cases appealed to arbitration, analyze evidence, prepare witnesses and assist counsel in preparing and presenting arbitration cases.
Develop and deliver labor and employee relations training to managers and front line supervisors on contract interpretation, grievance administration, union avoidance, labor campaigns, arbitration, effective leadership, positive employee relations, etc.
Identify, train and direct critical response team to be utilized during union organizing activity.
Provide labor updates regularly to HR Business Partners and conduct quarterly calls with front line leaders.
Provide best practice resources to lead and enhance Bell’s positive employee relations initiative.
Jointly work with teams on specific projects that are created to address opportunities, major business changes and/or labor and employee relations issues.
Research and create processes, tools to increase efficiency and effectiveness in managing employee and labor relations issues.
Analyze and report on trends and legal developments to improve the Employee and Labor Relations department and/or ensure compliance with labor and employment laws.
Develop labor capability of HR Business Partners, HR Associates and interns.
Prepares for and attends grievance meetings, and provides support and direction to front line managers.
Identify systemic issues or opportunities and develop solutions that can be implemented to address issues.
Revise policies and procedures when required, and develop communication and implementation plan.
Coordinate and monitor union free activities and strike preparedness planning.
Provide on-site support and lead Bell’s response to union organizing activity.
Maintain all labor relations records, documents, arbitration awards, Memorandums of Understanding and collective bargaining notes and history.
Bachelor’s Degree in Labor/Industrial Relations, Human Resources or other closely related discipline
- Juris Doctorate preferred, but not required
At least 7 years’ experience specific to Labor Relations support to include:
Support for a represented workforce of at least 2,500 employees
Manufacturing and/or aerospace
· Interpreting and Administering a collective bargaining agreement
- Preparing for and leading grievance meetings with management and union leadership
Successful applicant must be:
Adept at prioritizing workload, meeting deadlines and working effectively with managers.
Skilled at analyzing data and/or metrics.
Knowledgeable in applicable federal and state employment and labor relations regulations (i.e. FLSA, FMLA, USERRA, EEO, NLRA, Taft-Hartley Act, etc).
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and HRIS systems. Some travel required
Able to travel5% of the time
First chair contract negotiations experienceor significant experience participating in or helping prepare for contract negotiations
Proven success at leading union avoidance activities, including prior organizing campaign experience
