The Senior Manufacturing Design Technician , provides technical assistance to engineers and operators in the support of manufacturing engineering activities for composites & bonding manufacturing. Is the primary liaison between engineering and the operators with regards to transitioning design to manufacturing process. Is very much engaged in the prototyping and developing phase to optimize the design and process. May carry out engineering assignments which have a basic degree of complexity, to include: configuration management, bill of material revision, generation and release of discrete jobs, creation of routers, and parts disposition. Performs assignments designed to develop engineering work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. Prepares reports, charts and graphs for scientific or engineering personnel to use in making decisions on design of experiment development.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops and/or assists Manufacturing Engineers in developing new or modifying existing production processes and methods. Monitors processes and collects data to insure the integrity of the process.

  • Provides technical advice and guidance to shop floor to resolve manufacturing issues relating to materials, processes, and tooling including coordinating with design engineering for creation of Engineering Change Notices (ECN's).

  • Generate Work Instructions and MPDs in support of standardized and simplified manufacturing processes.

  • Assists in maintaining files outlining product flow and computing standard hours by assembly.

  • May write procedures for the operation of new and existing equipment.

  • Assists in evaluating, purchasing, installing and putting into operation new equipment and processes.

  • Assists in conducting make-or-buy studies and implementing all make recommendations.

  • Assists in determining technical requirements of various manufacturing facilities and writing capital equipment justifications.

  • Works with Engineering to evaluate, develop and review electronic, mechanical or electro-mechanical products.

  • May interface with customers and vendors to resolve manufacturing issues.

  • May participate in the development of proposal data including cost estimates and technical/management data.

  • Active engagement in interpreting needs between Mfg. Engineering and Production Assembly and Test.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and electronic principles.

  • Must have hands on experience in performing composite lay-ups and bonding operations.

  • Ability to perceive or troubleshoot potential problems and apply logical or scientific solutions to problems.

  • Knowledge of Scientific Problem Solving methods; ie. Six Sigma, RCCA, Pareto Analysis, etc.

  • Ability to train and dictate training materials for technical needs in Production, to include Solder, Crimping, ESD.

  • Basic personal computer skills in Microsoft Office, ARMs, Matrix, understanding of MRP and ERP systems; SAP and Oracle a plus.

  • Ability to mentally visualize and comprehend all aspects of a manufacturing equipment or tooling problem, understand the interrelationships of factors affecting a given situation, and take corrective action.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, parts lists and wire data lists.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must have excellent writing skills.

  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical safety practices.

  • Time management skills are required to work multiple projects concurrently, and of various size and scope.

  • Job qualifications specific to this role (composites) include:

  • Understanding of clean room and facility environment

  • Understand NDI

  • Matched tooling & bladder process

  • Automated ply cutting equipment

  • Curing equipment processing

  • Laser projection & ply development

  • Understand thermal processing – CTE

  • Laminate producibility and understanding composites laminate design

  • Understanding of thermosets and thermoplastics

  • Structural bonding & surface preparation

Education:

  • Typically requires a minimum of eight years of experience in a manufacturing environment with a high school diploma, or equivalent education or experience to demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the job duties.
